35 Cents

Recently, I opted to sell a portion of my comic collection. I have a rather large collection and a somewhat small apartment, so the time had come to pare down. I put together 22 short boxes of Key Issues, Complete Runs, Indie Titles, Silver, Bronze & Moderns, etc. Many of these were duplicates I had inadvertently acquired, others were series I had read but didn’t figure I would ever revisit, holding back on parting with my “best” books.
The total count came out to 2,750 books. The buyer filled Five short boxes with books he wanted for his shop (keys, complete runs, signed covers, etc. The contents of the remaining 17 boxes were relegated as ‘bulk’ to be resold to a ‘bulk’ comic buyer. The final sale figure came out to an average of $0.35 per book. Ouch!
I knew going into this that comics are currently in a Buyers Market, almost pulling the plug on the whole enterprise. Still, space and cash considerations ruled the day, and I also didn’t relish the idea of reloading all those boxes back into my vehicle (they’re heavy!) , so I went thru with the sale. Would I do it again? Not in this market.
