Recently, I opted to sell a portion of my comic collection. I have a rather large collection and a somewhat small apartment, so the time had come to pare down. I put together 22 short boxes of Key Issues, Complete Runs, Indie Titles, Silver, Bronze & Moderns, etc. Many of these were duplicates I had inadvertently acquired, others were series I had read but didn’t figure I would ever revisit, holding back on parting with my “best” books.
The total count came out to 2,750 books. The buyer filled Five short boxes with books he wanted for his shop (keys, complete runs, signed covers, etc. The contents of the remaining 17 boxes were relegated as ‘bulk’ to be resold to a ‘bulk’ comic buyer. The final sale figure came out to an average of $0.35 per book. Ouch!
I knew going into this that comics are currently in a Buyers Market, almost pulling the plug on the whole enterprise. Still, space and cash considerations ruled the day, and I also didn’t relish the idea of reloading all those boxes back into my vehicle (they’re heavy!) , so I went thru with the sale. Would I do it again? Not in this market.

Books of the Week: 12/11/19

1. Immortal Hulk #28 (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Al Ewing / Art: Tom Reilly & Matias Begara / Colors: Chris O’Halloran / Cover: Alex Ross
‘The New World’
Just when you think this title is going off the rails, Ewing pulls out a brilliant book like this one. Wonderfully dark and cynical. The art complements the writing beautifully. Wow.

2. Fantastic Four #17 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘Point of Origin – Part 4: Secret Agenda’
Writer: Dan Slott / Art: Luciano Vecchio, Carlos Magno, Bob Quinn & Sean Izaakse / Colors: Ericl Arciniega / Cover: Nick Bradshaw & John Rauch
Great storytelling combined with some solid action make this book shine. The dialog pops and Slott manages to cram a ton of story into a single issue. Outstanding.

3. Annihilation: Scourge – Beta Ray Bill #1 (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Michael Moreci / Art: Alberto Alburquerque / Colors: Jay David Ramos / Cover: Josemaria Casanovas
Another outstanding installment in the Annihilation EVENT! Beta Ray Bill & Lockjaw make for a great pair. The book features an excellent battle sequence with a truly surprising ending. Most surprising of all, I actually enjoyed Al Alburquerque’s art. It looked great.

4. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #14 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘A Night Off’ (Final Issue)
Writer: Tom Taylor / Art: Marguerite Sauvage & Ken Lashley / Colors: Mauguerite Sauvage & Rachelle Rosenberg / Cover: Andrew C. Robinson
Beautiful send-off for this up and down Spidey title. This issue took a a simple story and packed it with tons of feels. Very nicely done.

5. Superman #18 (DC) ★★★★★
‘Truth’
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis / Art: Ivan Reis & Joe Prado / Colors: Alex Sinclair
A surprisingly moving issue, considering the plot was well known going into the book. The art fit the story perfectly, showing the effect on Superman’s friends and the people of Metropolis. I’m looking forward to seeing how this changes things going forward.

6. Something Is Killing the Children #3 (Boom!) ★★★★★
‘The Angel of Archer’s Peak – Part 4’
Writer: James Tynion IV / Art: Werther Dell’edera / Colors: Miquel Muerto / Cover: Werther Dell’edera & Giovanna Niro
Very intense story telling as we finally get a look at what’s been doing the killing (maybe?). The chainsaw sequence adds some timely levity. The art remains stunning.

7. Annihilation: Scourge – Silver Surfer #1 (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Dan Abnett / Art: Paul Davidson / Colors: Matt Milla / Cover: Josemaria Casanovas
Really interesting take on the Surfer. His battle with the Revengers was short, but intense. The talky bits stayed compelling and the story flowed beautifully through to a surprising conclusion. Great stuff.

8. Undiscovered Country #2 (Image) ★★★★
Writer: Scott Snyder & Charles Soule / Art: Giuseppe Camuncoli & Daniele Orlandini / Colors: Matt Wilson / Cover (B): Crank!
Nice intro flashback provides some more insight into our cast. Tension abounds as the crew decide on their course of action. Additional mysteries and secrets make for a compelling read. Solid stuff.

9.  Amazing Mary Jane #3 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Leah Williams / Art: Carlos Gomez & Lucas Werneck / Colors: Carlos Lopez / Cover: Humberto Ramos & Edgar Delgado
Nice rebound. The story is moving again, the laughs hit the right note and the pacing is brisk and highly entertaining. All this and Sonny Diperna too! Cool.

10.  Seven Days #3 (Lion Forge: Catalyst Prime)  ★★★
Writer: Gail Simone / Art: Jose Luis & Jonas Trinidade / Colors: Michelle Madsen / Cover: Saida Temofonte
We get the invaders’ backstory in this issue, and a glimmer of a battle scene, but mainly this book was about talking… lots… of… talking. Too much talking frankly. Oddly, the talking doesn’t explain some key things, like why would a reptilian race create sentries in humanoid form? Also: Exactly how did the sentries destroy the Earth’s armed forces if they can only protect themselves from one direction at a time? It’s still a solid concept, but I’m worried this book may be heading off the rails.

1. Annihilation: Scourge – Fantastic Four (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Chrstos Gage / Art: Diego Olotegul & Juan Vlasco with Cam Smith & Scott Hanna / Colors: Erick Arciniega / Cover: Josemaria Casanovas
A wonderful FF book. Going back to the Death of Johnny Storm days to add an unexpected twist to the overall story. I loved the writing. Doubt, regret, fears, it digs deep into the FF’s (especially Johnny’s) minds in a way that added a lot of new depth to the characters. The art was sometimes hit and miss, but the final battle scenes were outstanding.

2. Daredevil #14 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘Through Hell – Part 4’
Writer: Chip Zdarsky / Art: Marco Checchetto & Francesco Mobili / Colors: Nolan Woodard / Cover: Julian Totino Tedesco
DD’s back… sort of. A lot of things good going in this book. It could have been a jumbled mess, but Zdarsky keeps the narrative tight,  weaving all the threads together beautifully. The art remains moody and surprisingly dynamic for such a talky issue.

3. Annihilation: Scourge  Nova #1 (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Matthew Rosenberg / Art: Ibraim Roberson / Colors: Carlos Lopez / Cover: Josemaria Casanovas
Another great installment of the Annihilation Scourge mini EVENT!. The art was solid, with some fun battle scenes. Annihilus looks off, but it works. The writing is where this book shines. The narraitive moves smoothly, with a perfect blend of humor and tension.

4. Black Cat #7 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘The Want’
Writer: Jed MacKay / Art: Travel Foreman / Colors: Brian Reber / Cover: Otto Schmidt (Venom Island Variant)
The slice of the history featuring the Guild, Odessa and Fox, anchors this exposition heavy book. It does manage to remain compelling even with little action. The return of Forman to art duties is a big plus. This title is one of Marvel’s best kept secrets.

5. Batman #84 (DC) ★★★★
‘City of Bane – Part 10’
Writer: Tom King / Art: Jorge Fornes / Colors: Jordie Bellaire / Cover: Mikel Janin
An interesting narrative construcution, along with Fornes’ art, make this book pop. Things are finally beginning to make sense. I really liked this issue.

6. Amazing Spider-Man #35 (Marvel) ★★★
‘Doom’s Day’
Writer: Nick Spencer / Art: Oscar Balazuda / Colors: Steve Firchow / Cover: Tony Daniel & Edgar Delgado
A very talky book, although the dialog pops and does a lot of the heavy lifting in an otherwise dull story. Bazaldua’s art provides a kick this title has needed for a while.

7. Doctor Doom #3 (Marvel) ★★★
‘Death in the Afternoon’
Writer: Christopher Cantwell / Art: Salvador Larroca / Colors: Guru-eFX / Cover: Aco
I found the Hell/Mephisto sequences in this book somewhat confusing. The writing still clicks, but the narrative felt a bit… choppy. Storywise we don’t get much new, except for another one of Doom’s visions. Read like a breather between acts, of sorts.

8. Spider-Man & Venom: Double Trouble #2 (Marvel) ★★★
Writer: Mariko Tamaki / Art: Gurihiru / Colors: Gurihiru / Cover: Gurihiru
Not nearly as fun as the first issue. More a straightforward body-switching story. What jokes there are fall a bit flat or don’t live up to their potential. Still, an entertaining read, if only for the passcode sequence.

9. X-Men #3 (Marvel) ★★
‘Hordeculture’
Writer: Jonathan Hickman / Art: Leinil Francis Yu & Gerry Alanguilan / Colors: Sunny Gho & Rain Beredo / Cover: Lenil Francis Yu & Sunny Gho
Somewhat old-fashioned story, in that the ‘villains were ridiculous. Will these X-Men ever learn to fight as a a team? (Did that bullet to the head make Scott forget how?) Solo they each get beat. Duh. An interesting idea wrapped up in a dumb story. “S-Word”?, “A-word”?. Please.

10. Justice League #37 (DC) ★★
‘Justice/Doom War – Part 8’
Writer: Scott Singer / Art: Jorge Jimenez / Colors: Alejandro Sanchez / Cover: Francis Manapul
An immediate cut away from the promised battle, finds Supes and crew holding hands in a circle and.. talking. So. Much. Talking. Meanwhile,  the Anti-Monoitor is hit by a car. Perpetua hurls a planet at Earth and we get promised, yet another, Great Battle. Completely ridiculous, but at least things are happening, and people aren’t acting stupid. There is that.

1. Martian Manhunter #10
(DC) ★★★★★
‘Through Carnage to Joy’
Writer: Steve Orlando / Art: Riley Rossmo / Colors: Ivan Plascencia / Cover: Riley Rossmo
J’onn and Diane grow closer during a big battle in the Mindscape against J’onn’s Three Great Beasts. Crazy good visuals run throughout this book. There’s even a few feels. The final coda didn’t add much, but it does remind you there is unfinished business to take care of.

2. Invisible Woman #5 (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Mark Waid / Art: Mattia De Lulis / Colors: Mattia De Lulis / Cover: Adam Hughes
Tension filled ending to the IW mini-series. This was a great read with a lot of unexpected moments that really make it a stand out. This series really did a great job showing how powerful Sue actually is. Great stuff. Hopefully some of this will carry over to the regular FF title.

3. Fantastic Four: Grand Design #2 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Tom Scioli / Art: Tom Scioli / Colors: Tom Scioli / Cover: Tom Scioli
This book packs a lot of FF history into a single narrative. It gets confusing at times, as I am unfamiliar with a lot of the source material, but still, it’s a interesting ride. Bold choice to retrofit elements from later FF stories into the earlier stories.

4. Second Coming #5 (Ahoy) ★★★★
Writer: Mark Russell / Art: Richard Pace & Leonard Kirk / Colors: Andy Troy / Cover: Amanda Conner & Paul Mounts
Interesting view of history from Satan and God’s perspectives. The dialog in this issue sparkles, it’s so good. Sunstar’s quest to adopt a baby goes predictably wrong, but it has a heck of a payoff. Another solid book.

5. Fantastic Four: Negative Zone #1 (Marvel) ★★★
‘Ethical Dilemmas in Modern Science’
Writer: Mike Carey / Art: Stefano Caselli / Colors: Erick Arciniega
‘What Are the Fantastix For?’
Writer: Ryan North / Art: Steve Uy / Colors: Steve Uy

One-Shot featuring an FF and a Fantastix Story. The FF one was actually pretty good. It illustrates how Reed’s ethics often get the group in trouble. The Fantstix story was a fun surprise as I never though we would see them again. This was a somewhat siller story (Hell, Ryan North) than the first. Both stories were enjoyable, just not very memorable.

6. Venom #20 (Marvel) ★★
‘Oversight – Part 2’
Writer: Donny Cates / Art: Iban Coello & Ze Carlos / Colors: Rain Beredo / Cover: Kyle Hotz & Dan Brown

Fairly straightforward ending to the Absolute Carnage story, with a hint of what’s up next. Not bad, but not really much to write home about either. There are the Brock family feels, otherwise… meh.

1. Canto #6 (IDW) ★★★★★
Writer: David M. Booher / Art: Drew Zucker / Colors: Vittorio Astone / Cover: Deron Bennett
A beautifully somber, moving and inspiring finale to our hero’s journey. It’s been a long time since I shed a tear reading a comic. They’re promising further adventures in 2020. I can’t wait. What a wonderful series.

2. Shapes #1 (Cave Pictures) ★★★★★
Writer: Jason Brubaker & Rick Rekedal / Art: Jason Brubaker / Colors: Jason Brubaker & Asdrian Amarteifiq / Cover: Jason Brubaker
What an adorable read! Great art and a very interesting story involving gaming crossing with real life. I love that our hero, Tripp refuses to believe any of this is actually happening. It makes for a fun dynamic. I’m in.

3. King Thor #3 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘Chapter 3: A Storm of Prayers’
Writer: Jason Aaron / Art: Esad Ribic with Das Pastoras / Colors: Ive Svorcina with Das Pastoras / Cover: Esad Ribic

This was a great read. Threads from all over recent Thor stories woven together into a truly epic battle. The stakes get even higher with the cliffhanger ending. Issue #4 promises to be a-mazing.

4. Gwenpool Strikes Back #4 (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Leah Williams & Christoper Hastings / Art: David Baldeon / Colors: Jesus Aburtov / Cover: Terry Dodson & Rachel Dodson
The silliness reaches its apex with more Gwenpools than you can shake a Mjolinor at. Tons of fun. Plus an ‘In-Laws’ reference! Baldeon continues to show why he’s one of my favorite current artists. Aces.

5. Show’s End #4 (Mad Cave) ★★★★★
Writer: Anthony Cleveland / Art: Jef Sadzinski / Colors: Julian Gonzalez / Cover: Julian Gonzalez
Lordy! Things get real in this latest issue of Show’s End. Certain mysteries are solved just as everything we thought we knew changes almost completely. Lots to like about this issue. It’s grim, dark, and very powerful. A great read.

6. Once & Future #4 (Boom! Studios) ★★★★★
Writer: Kieron Gillen / Art: Dan Mora / Colors: Tamra Bonvillain / Cover: Dan Mora
I love the art in this series. It just grabs you and doesn’t let go. The story is moving along with a trail of blood and mystery in its wake. I love that its taking its time. And yes, I’m still crushing on Duncan.

7. Strikeforce #2 (Marvel -10/23) ★★★★★
Writer: Tini Howard / Art: German Peralta / Colors: Miroslav Mrva / Cover: Andrea Sorrentino & Dean White
This was a surprisingly good read. The writing was fun, with plenty of pop. I love Satana. She and Jessica steal the show. I really didn’t expect Strikeforce to be one of Marvel’s funniest titles. The art matches the story tone quite well tool. A nice, and surprising, rebound.

8. Metal Men #2 (DC) ★★★★★
‘To the Nth Degree’
Writer: Dan Didio / Art: Shane Davis & Michelle Delecki / Colors: Jason Wright / Cover: Shane Davis, Michelle Delecki & Jason Wright

The Metal Men get their butts kicked by the Nth Metal Man in a shockingly brief and costly fight sequence. There’s a lot to unpack in this book. Magnus is a bit of a prick, but he kinda always is, so there’s that. The art in this book is tops, and does a lot of the heavy lifting. Can’t wait to see where this goes.

9. Flash Forward #3 (DC) ★★★★
‘Chapter 3: Freefall’
Writer: Scott Lobdell / Art: Brett Booth & Norm Rapmund / Colors: Luis Guerrero / Cover: Doc Shaner

Justice League vampires and the return (sort of) of one of Wally’s best friends make for an another solid read. Plenty of feels to go along with the action in this one. I do hope they switch up the formula in the next issue though. This could get old fast.

10. 2099 – Alpha (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Nick Spencer / Art: Viktor Bogdanovic / Colors: Marte Gracia / Covers: Patrick Gleason & Guru-eFX
Top notch art and solid writing highlight this EVENT! Kick-off. I know nothing regarding 2099, so I found the mysteries of this book quite interesting. Interesting enough to wade into yet another EVENT! Series? I don’t know. Jury’s out on that one.

11. Loki #5 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘The Man from Up North’
Writer: Daniel Kibblesmith / Art: Andy MacDonald / Colors: David Curiel / Cover: Ozgur Yildirim

The latest Loki mini-seies ends with a fun western adventure and a treatise on what is and isn’t reality, history and stories. This was a very enjoyable series, it’s a shame it ended so soon.

12. Deadpool #1 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Kelly Thompson / Art: Chris Bachalo with Wayne Faucher, Tim Townsend, Al Vey, Jaime Mendoza, Livesay & Victor Olazaba / Colors: David Curiel / Cover: Chris Bachalo & Tim Townsend
Fun, breezy read. Interesting approach – just throw the reader right into the story. Bachalo’s art in this book is also really impressive. There’s a lot to like here.

13. Immortal Hulk #27 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘This is the Day’
Writer: Al Ewing / Art: Joe Bennett with Ruy Jose, Belardino Brabo, Marc Deering & Sean Parsons / Colors: Paul Mounts / Cover: Alex Ross

Special Agent Hulk? Okaaay…. I actually really liked this book. The tri-narrative structure, the dialog (especially from the Minotaur), it all really popped. Still feels like a hard left from previous issues, but remains a solid read.

14. Spider-Man: Velocity #4 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Dennis “Hopeless” Hallum / Art: Emilio Laiso / Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg / Cover: Skan
This was actually quite an enjoyable read (No one’s more surprised than me at this point). The Spidey in the lab sequence was great. I’m guessing there’s going to have to be a down side to his speed suit, other wise why wouldn’t he use it all his other titles?

15. Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #5 (DC) ★★★★
Writer: Matt Fraction / Art: Steve Lieber / Colors: Nathan Fairbairn / Cover: Steve Lieber & Nathan Fairbairn
Jimmy Olsen takes on Batman with predictably fun results. We get more Olsen/Luthor history, and Jimmy’s sister. A fun take on Batman, and the usual quality art makes this another solid read.

16. Roku #2 (Valiant) ★★★★
Writer: Cullen Bunn / Art: Ramon F. Bachs / Colors: Stephane Paitreau / Cover: Elsa Charretier
Stronger narrative, coupled with exciting fight sequences, and a unique play on exposition make this issue a pleasant surprise. Still a bit more graphic that I prefer, but all in all a solid, action thriller.

17. Annihilation: Scourge – Alpha #1 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Matthew Rosenberg / Art: Juanan Ramirez with Cian Tormey / Colors: Federico Blee / Cover: Josemaria Casanovas
Marvel’s newest Mini-EVENT! Kicks off with some fun and exciting battles between Blastaar, Annihilus and The Scourge (who I initially thought might be Knull, from AbsCarnage… but alas). Loved the writing on this book, even if the art got a bit wonky a points (can’t anybody draw a Nova helmet well?). I’ll admit it… I’m hooked. Nicely done, House of Ideas.

18. Strikeforce #3 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Tini Howard / Art: German Peralta with Marco Ruby / Colors: Guru-eFX with Marco Ruby / Cover: Andrea Sorrentino & Matthew Wilson
The final-ish battle against the Vridai centers this book, but there’s so much more going on. Lots of great little bits spread around the ever-growing cast. This books has really found its legs. Fun stuff.

19. Something is Killing the Children #3 (Boom! Studios) ★★★★
‘The Angel of Archer’s Peak – Part 3’
Writer: James Tynion IV / Art: Werther Dell’edera / Colors: Miquel Muerto / Cover: Werther Dell’edera & Giovanna Niro

A dryer read than previous issues, with another death and lots of unanswered questions. I enjoyed the interrogation sequence quite a bit. It was tense and had just the right tone.

20. Marauders #2 (Marvel) ★★★
‘The Red Coronation’
Writer: Gerry Duggan / Art: Matteo Lolli / Colors: Federico Blee / Cover: Russell Dauterman & Matthew Wilson

It’s always a pleasure to see Batroc. This book was a mixed bag. Lots of stuff happened, but none of it seems to really matter. Sort of a ‘Day on the Life’ of the Marauders. Pyro’s tattoo is absurd. I’m still not unsure of the motives of this new ‘Kate’ Pryde. It sort of came out of nowhere.

21. Captain America #16 (Marvel) ★★★
‘The Legend of Steve – Part 4’
Writer: Ta-Nehisi Coates / Art: Bob Quinn / Colors: Matt Milla / Cover: Alex Ross

Some U.S. Agent vs Cap action, more villainous intrigue and a surprise ending. One of the better Cap books in a while. Dialog and art still a bit wonky at times, but any improvement is welcome at this point.

22. Avengers #26 (Marvel) ★★★
‘As Strong as the Stars’
Writer: Jason Aaron / Art: Dale Keown with Andrea Sorrentino & Joe Weeks, Cam Smith & Craig Yeung with Andrea Sorrentino / Colors: Jason Keith with Erick Arciniega & Jay David Ramos / Cover: Dales Keown & Jason Keith

The origin of the Starbrand. I liked this book up to a point. A bit too heavy on the melodrama. The art was solid, but some of the dialog went right through me.

23. Amazing Spider-Man #34 (Marvel) ★★★
‘Target: Doom’
Writer: Nick Spencer / Art: Patrick Gleason / Colors: Matthew Wilson, Dee Cunniffe & Chris O’Halloran / Cover: Patrick Gleason & Matthew Wilson

Gleason’s art is the high point of this book. The plot appears both convoluted and predictable, which is a neat trick. It does seem odd that if Doom were assassinated in NYC, Spidey would be the only hero to show up and investigate. Fortunately 2099 is a short EVENT!.

24. Absolute Carnage #5 (Marvel) ★★★
Writer: Donny Cates / Art: Ryan Stegman with Mark Bagley & John Dell / Colors: Frank Martin / Cover: Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer & Frank Martin
Swift and a bit too tidy wrap up of the AC EVENT!. Naturally the solution results in a new menace… coming soon to an EVENT! near you. A bit of a buzz-kill really. Also, shame on Stegman and the Editors for not catching the Spidey continuity error. Took me right out of the story. Onto Venom #20.

25. Justice League #36 (DC) ★★
‘Justice/Doom War – Part 7’
Writer: Scott Snyder / Art: Francis Manapul & Howard Porter / Colors: Hi-Fi / Cover: Francis Manapul

Perpetua predictably turns on the Legion of Doom as Luthor leads an army to finish off the Justice League. It’s a slow build, but at least its building to… something? The last panel is ridiculous. I laughed out loud… which I don’t think was their intention.

26. Fantastic Four 2099 #1 (Marvel) ★★
Writer: Karla Pacheco / Art: Steven Cummings / Colors: Chris Sotomayor / Cover: Toni Infante
H.E.R.B.I.E. has a dark side. Who knew? Did not see that ending coming. There were some interesting parts to this and some ridiculous parts (Vikings in 2099, really?). Lots of unexplained holes. Perhaps they’ll get to them in later books. I do hope we see Vellum again.

27. Excalibur #2 (Marvel) ★★
‘Verse II: A Tower of Flowers’
Writer: Tini Howard / Art: Marcus To / Colors: Erick Arciniega / Cover: Mahmud Asrar & Matthew Wilson

Somewhat clunky read, what with druids, LeFays and LOTS of talking back and forth that reveals very little. I know this is a set-up issue, but it could have read a bit clearer

28. Batman #83 (DC) ★★
‘City of Bane – Part 9’
Writer: Tom King / Art: Mikel Janin / Colors: Jordie Bellaire / Cover: Mikel Janin & Jordie Bellaire

Overly long mourning sequence filled with poetry and grim visuals. The whole thing felt cold and hollow. Not unlike this entire Thomas Wayne storyline. A rare miss in this current run.

29. Amazing Mary Jane #2 (Marvel) ★
Writer: Leah Williams / Art: Carlos Gomez / Colors: Carlos Lopez / Cover: Humberto Ramos & Edgar Delgado
Not as fun as the previous issue. A lot of over the top dialog and odd character interactions. Mysterio/Cage as a raving lunatic feels somewhat out of character. Its difficult to believe anyone would fall for this ruse. I know its a humor comic, but c’mon.

30. Absolute Carnage: Captain Marvel #1 (Marvel) ★
Writer: Emily Ryan Lerner / Art: Andrea Broccardo & Le Beau Underwood / Colors: Dono Sanchez-Almara / Cover: David Nakayama
So… I have no idea what happened in this book. Carnage shows up, bonds with Chewie and Carol defeats him… by flying into space… somehow? Nope. No sense at all. Nice art tho, and the space intro is fun too. Phyllis looks to much like Aunt May. Old ladies do color their hair, Marvel.

1. Black Cat Annual #1 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘Let’s Get Married’
Writer: Jed Mackay / Art: Joey Vazquez, Natacha Bustos & Juan Gedeon / Colors: Brian Reber / Cover: J. Scott Campbell & Sabine Rich

Absolutely delightful. Beautiful artwork, great dialog and a fun heist story. I love Cat and Spidey together. Jed MacKay continues to show why Black Cat is one of Marvel’s best current titles. Awesome stuff.

2. Invaders #11 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘Dead in the Water – Part 5’
Writer: Chip Zdarsky / Art: Carlos Magno with Butch Guice / Colors: Alex Guimaraes / Cover: Butch Guice & Romulo Fajardo Jr.

Very cool book that explores Cap & Namor’s past at the same time showing how strong their relationship remains. I really liked Namor in this book, Zdarsky captured all of his complexities in a single issue. (Yes Namor’s situation was resolved way too quickly and easily… but hey, comics!).

3. Agents of Atlas #4 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘The Portal City of Pan – Part 4’
Writer: Greg Pak / Art: Nico Leon & Pop Mhan / Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg / Cover: Junggeun Yoon

That moment when you know something’s coming, but when it does it’s totally unexpected. Another fun book building towards a confrontation with Jimmy Woo, Mike Nguyan and the A’s of A. This continues to be a very fun and enjoyable series.

4. Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #50 (Marvel) ★★★★
(Final Issue)
Writer: Ryan North / Art: Derek Charm & Erica Henderson / Colors: Rico Renzi / Cover: Erica Henderson

Well,…damn, now I have to go back and pick up the previous 48 issues I haven’t read. This was a fun book, even if I had not idea what was going on. The sequence with Galactus & Doreen on the moon was magical. Ryan North’s writing is amazing. I can’t wait to see what he does next.

5. Seven Days #2 (Lion Forge: Catalyst Prime) ★★★★
Writer: Gail Simone / Art: Jose Luis & Jonas Trinidade / Colors: Michelle Madsen / Cover: Stjepan Sejic
Earth’s heroes take it to the alien invaders. Great to see Quincredibe in action again. The story got a bit confusing at points (I blame the reader – it has been a month since I read issue #1), but the book moves at a good clip, with a few surprises thrown in as well. Solid stuff.

6. Guardians of the Galaxy #11 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘Faithless – Part 5 of 6’
Writer: Donny Cates / Art: Cory Smith & Victor Olazaba / Colors: David Curiel / Cover: Geoff Shaw & Dean White

Things are looking pretty grim for the GotG. Nice job of subverting expectations after the Big Battle sequence. If Rocket can’t save the day, I don’t know who can. Issue #12 promises to be something.

7. X-Men #2 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘Summoner’
Writer: Jonathan Hickman / Art: Leinil Francis Yu & Gerry Alanguilan / Colors: Sunny Gho / Cover: Lenil Francis Yu & Sunny Gho

Shoot first and ask questions later. No wonder everyone hates the X-Men. I actually liked this book. The dialog was fun and the art is quite good too. The story? Meh. That Cyclops and his kids acted like jerks shouldn’t be a surprise, but it was unexpected. Yay?

8. Fallen Angels #1 (Marvel) ★★★
‘Bushido’
Writer: Bryan Hill / Art: Syzmon Kudranski / Colors: Frank D’Armata / Cover: Ashley Witter

Interesting, if somewhat confusing story about digital highs, a lost child and Mutants who thrive on danger. Plenty to like (the Magneto sequence was tops), but my unfamiliarity with Psylocke has me at a disadvantage in terms of connecting with this book.

9. History of the Marvel Universe #5 (Marvel) ★★★
Writer: Mark Waid / Art: Javier Rodriguez & Alvaro Lopez / Colors: Javier Rodriguez / Cover: Steve McNiven, Mark Farmer & Morry Hollowell
A very “Just the facts, Ma’am” recounting of modern Marvel history. I found it interesting as this is a period I am fairly unfamiliar with. Still, it reads a bit drier than previous issues.

10. Event Leviathan #6 (DC) ★★★
(Final Issue)
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis / Art: Alex Maleev / Colors: Alex Maleev / Cover: Alex Maleev

Not the big reveal / conclusion I was hoping for, but a very interesting read nonetheless. Am I annoyed that it doesn’t really end, but continues in Action 1018? A little.

Honorable Mention:
Agents of Atlas #3
(Marvel – 10/23/19) ★★★★★
‘The Portal City of Pan – Part 3’
Writer: Greg Pak / Art: Nico Leon / Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg / Cover: Junggeun Yoon

Greg Pak continues to write light and breezy dialog that entertains and moves the story along seamlessly. I like all the simultaneous mysteries, they’re a lot of fun. Plus that last panel… squeee! I have no idea why I originally skipped this book.

1. Daredevil #13 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘Through Hell – Part 3’
Writer: Chip Zdarsky / Art: Marco Checchetto / Colors: Nolan Woodard / Cover: Julian Totino Tedesco

A cover-up, and a huge twist ending. Very cool. The opening sequence with Elektra & Matt is perfect. Lots of great stuff in this cool, low-key issue.

2. Spider-Man & Venom: Double Trouble #1 (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Mariko Tamaki / Art: Gurihiru / Colors: Gurihiru / Cover: Gurihiru
Delightfully hilarious book featuring Spider-Man theme song and some truly wonderful artwork. The pages are so expressive and the dialog consistently pops. Bonus: it’s NOT a One-Shot. There’s more to come. Huzzah!

3. Fantastic Four #16 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘Point of Origin – Part 3: Fantastic Planet’
Writer: Dan Slott / Art: Sean Izaakse / Colors: Marcio Menyz / Cover: Nick Bradshaw & John Rauch

Wonderful issue showcasing each of the FF’s members in situations that suit them beautifully. I loved Ben with the freaks, and the Sue & Reed scenes were just delightful. “No Undersea Monarchs…” Hilarious. The Johnny story is intriguing. Let’s see where all this takes us.

4. Doctor Doom #2 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘Mother Morgan Comes to Me’
Writer: Christopher Cantwell / Art: Salvador Larroca / Colors: Guru-eFX / Cover: ACO

Interesting book. Lots of things happening in this one. I like the mystery of the frame-up. I like Morgan & HERBIE. I like a lot of things about this book. Oh, and that ending… woah.

5. Black Cat #6 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘Date Night’
Writer: Jed MacKay / Art: Mike Dowling / Colors: Brian Reber / Cover: J. Scott Campbell & Sabine Rich

Tons of fun with Cat a on a date… with Batroc! The sparkling dialog throughout, plus the back and for the forth with the Fox action and Cat’s date make for an entertaining & compelling read.

6. Absolute Carnage: Weapon Plus #1 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Jed MacKay / Art: Stefano Raffaele / Colors: Dono Sanchez-Almara / Cover: Skan
One of the better AC One-Shots, this book was packed with action and was truly unpredictable. It feels like this story is FINALLY coming together (it’s about time). Yeh, this was a big surprise, and a welcome one.

7. Undiscovered Country #1 (Image) ★★★★
Writer: Scott Snyder & Charles Soule / Art: Giuseppe Camuncoli & Daniele Orlandini / Colors: Matt Wilson / Cover: Giuseppe Camuncoli
Interesting take on a dystopian future where America is walled off from the rest of the world. Mostly an introduction & exposition issue, but there were a few big moments that caught my attention. Def interested to read more.

8. Batman #82 (DC) ★★★★
‘City of Bane – Part 8 ‘
Writer: Tom King / Art: Mikel Janin / Colors: Jordie Bellaire / Cover: David Finch & Alex Sinclair

Pretty cool fight between Batman, Cat & Bane. The ending was a bit of a surprise. Looking forward to see how this all wraps up.

9. Immortal Hulk #26 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘Status Quo Ante’
Writer: Al Ewing / Art: Joe Bennett & Run Jose / Colors: Paul Mounts / Cover: Alex Ross

A new chapter opens with a Banner manifesto and a lot of intrigue and semi-alliances. Its an interesting direction to be sure. Loved the Namor cameo. Bennett’s art has looked better. Maybe it was the bright colors.

10. X-Force #1 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘Hunting Ground’
Writer: Benjamin Percy / Art: Joshua Cassara / Colors: Dean White / Cover: Dustin Weaver

The inevitable blowback begins in this dark, brooding book. They really were careless on Krakoa. Too careless… feels out of character. I know it was necessary for the story, but it doesn’t ring true. I would have been surprised at the ending if it hadn’t been spoiled for me. Thanks WhatCulture.

11. Amazing Spider-Man #33 (Marvel) ★★★
‘Point Blank’
Writer: Nick Spencer / Art: Patrick Gleason / Colors: Matthew Wilson / Cover: Patrick Gleason & Matthew Wilson

A lot of story set-up in this book and not much else. The cover is very bait and switchy as Spidey 2099 barely appears. Still, there are some interesting seeds being planted that could be pretty entertaining going forrward. We’ll see.

12. New Mutants #1 (Marvel) ★★
‘The Sextant’
Writer: Ed Brisson & Jonathan Hickman / Art: Rod Reis / Colors: Rod Reis / Cover: Rod Reis

Nothing like arrogant, self-righteous New Mutants to get themselves into a mess. The whole bunch aren’t very likable. They acted like privileged jerks. I’m rooting for the Shi’ar.

13. Justice League #35 (DC) ★★
‘Justice/Doom War – Part 6’
Writer: Scott Snyder & James Tynion IV / Art: Francis Manapul / Colors: Francic Manapul & Hi-Fi / Cover: Rafael Albuquerque

A universe dies, Perpetua is all-powerful and instead of simply killing Hawkgirl & Shayne she disables their ship in the hope(?) that it crashes and does the job for her? Why do characters in this story keep making stupid decisions? It’s so… stupid. bah! This story better have an amazing finish.

14. Legion Of Super-Heroes #1 (DC) ★
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis / Art: Ryan Sook & Wade von Grawbadger / Colors: Jordie Bellaire / Cover: Ryan Sook
A bit of a jumbled mess. Lots of exposition and characters talking over each other in lame attempts at “youth humor”. I just don’t see a point or need for this book. Also, have I mentioned how much I hate aged up Jon Kent? It’s not working.

1. DCeased #6 (DC) ★★★★★
‘End of the World’
Writer: Tom Taylor / Art: Trevor Hairsine with Neil Edwards & Stefano Guardians / Colors: Rain Beredo / Cover: Mark Brooks

Okay, I did not expect this series to end like it did. Having said that, this was the best issue of the series. Brutal, surprising, even a laugh or two. The book also confirms that Cyborg is an idiot.

2. Fantastic Four: Grand Design #1 (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Tom Scioli / Art: Tom Scioli / Colors: Tom Scioli / Cover: Tom Scioli
The First 46 issues of the Fantastic Four in a single book? Pretty impressive job by Sciloli. The narrative by the 4 FF members provides a different feel from Ed Piskor’s X-Men GD, though the art & Design has a similar vibe. Great stuff.

3. Excalibur #1 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘The Accolade of Betsy Braddock’
Writer: Tini Howard / Art: Marcus To / Colors: Erick Arciniega / Cover: Mahmud Asrar & Matthew Wilson

Very entertaining book. Great dialog and solid art. Story takes an interesting direction with lots to explore. Great stuff.

4. Invisible Woman #4 (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Mark Waid / Art: Mattia De Lulis / Colors: Mattia De Lulis / Cover: Adam Hughes
Another tight, suspenseful spy thriller, with some key questions answered. Aiden’s turn is perhaps a bit cliche, but we’re talking spies here, so it works.

5. Silver Surfer: Black #5 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘Black – Part 5’
Writer: Donny Cates / Art: Tradd Moore / Colors: Dave Stewart / Cover: Tradd Moore & Felipe Sobreiro

Beautiful conclusion to the SSBlack mini-series. Sadly all that Norrin has created should be wiped out again by Galactus. Still, it’s a good story and a satisfying ending.

6. Venom #19 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Donny Cates / Art: Iban Coello / Colors: Rain Beredo / Cover: Kyle Hotz & Dan Brown
Solid rebound from the previous issue. I do love Dylan and Sleeper, plus there’s a new mystery to solve and I enjoy those too. If you had told me a year ago that I would become a Venom reader I would have never believed you. Nicely done Mr Cates.

7. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #13 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘You Say You Want a Revolution’
Writer: Tom Taylor / Art: Ken Lashley, Todd Nauck, Ig Guara & Dike Ruan / Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg / Cover: Andrew C. Robinson

Fun Fantastic Four story featuring Spider-Man. Are we going to get back to the ‘Friendly Neighborhood’ Spider-Man soon though? I feel this book has pulled away from it’s initial direction. Still, fun writing, nice art make for a fun read. Tho Johnny was on full flame way too much. Full flame in an apartment building? C’mon.

8. Marvel Zombies: Resurrection (Marvel) ★★★
Writer: Philip Kennedy Johnson / Art: Leonard Kirk / Colors: Guru-eFX / Cover: Inhyuk Lee
Marvel’s answer to DC’s ‘DCeased’ brings us a new take on Galactus, a foolishly impulsive Reed Richards and yes-men Tony Stark & Hank McCoy. Characters are doing what the writer wants them to do, not as they should behave. The art’s a bit hit and miss too. If you’re gonna do Zombies, have someone who can depict gore well.

9. Contagion #5 (Marvel) ★★
Writer: Ed Brisson / Art: Adam Gorham / Colors: Veronica Gandini / Cover: Juan Jose Ryp & Jesus Aburtov
This book makes no sense. Moon Knight frees Pei, Pei frees everone else. Problem solved? Why couldn’t one of the numerous other heroes have done the same thing earlier? Bogus ending to what had been an intriguing series. Lordy.

10. Death’s Head #4 (Marvel) ★
‘Jailbreak’
Writer: Tini Howard / Art: Kei Zama / Colors: Felipe Sobreiro / Cover: Nick Roche & Felipe Sobreirp

Underwhelming, rushed and confusing finale for this up and down series. No laughs, no suspense, no real action, just lots and lots of talking. Big disappointment, yes?

1. Martian Manhunter #9 (DC) ★★★★★
‘In the Atmosphere Factory’
Writer: Steve Orlando / Art: Riley Rossmo / Colors: Ivan Plascencia / Cover: Riley Rossmo

Intense storytelling at is best. The Thoughtopsy followed by Jones’ & Mead’s continued bonding make for one heck of a riveting read.

2. King Thor #2 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘Chapter 2: Gorr and the Last of the Gods’
Writer: Jason Aaron / Art: Esad Ribic / Colors: Ive Svorcina / Cover: Esad Ribic

The Gorr, Loki, Thor dynamic makes for an incredible read. Aaron’s writing in this issue is simply amazing. The visuals are grim, brutal and sublimely beautiful. An awesome book. What a rebound. Wow.

3. Marauders #1 (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Gerry Duggan / Art: Matteo Lolli / Colors: Federico Blee / Cover: Russell Dauterman & Matthew Wilson
I admit I was skeptical, but this book brought it. Great story from beginning to end. The art is gorgeous (despite the Storm controversy). A wonderfully solid read. Great stuff.

4. Spider-Man: Full Circle #1 (Marvel) ★★★★★
Writer: Various / Art: Various / Colors: Various / Cover: Rod Reis & Various
Fun (if a bit confusing towards the end) book built as a tag-along by nine different creative teams, each taking over where the last team stopped until the end. My favorites were Hickman/Bachalo, & Spencer/Allred, but they’re all great. At $9.99 it’s a bit steep, but at 90 pages, it evens out.

5. Absolute Carnage: Lethal Protectors #3 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Frank Tieri / Art: Flaviano / Colors: Federico Blee / Cover: Iban Coello & Jason Keith
Wow, they saved the best for last in this mini-series. I loved the team dynamics. Lots of tension and beautiful bookending to start and end things. A big, and welcome, surprise.

6. Amazing Spider-Man #32 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘Running Late’
Writer: Nick Spencer / Art: Patrick Gleason / Colors: Matthew Wilson / Cover: Ryan Ottley & Nathan Fairbairn

Love new artist, Patrick Gleason. Books feels alive again. Pete’s friends seem like fun. There’s a lightness to the writing that I really enjoyed. Intriguing mystery surrounding 2099. Tops.

7. Second Coming #4 (Ahoy) ★★★★
Writer: Mark Russell / Art: Richard Pace & Leonard Kirk / Colors: Andy Troy / Cover: Amanda Conner & Paul Mounts
Loved the heroes in therapy, Wheels of Justins and Row-Bot. Fun stuff. Jesus in jail with Pinecone was really good. Jesus reminiscing about where he went wrong rang awfully true. Great writing.

8. Show’s End #3 (Mad Cave) ★★★★
Writer: Anthony Cleveland / Art: Jef Sadzinski / Colors: Julian Gonzalez / Cover: Julian Gonzalez
Things go south quickly during Loralye’s debut performance. Cash problems, and a brilliant rescue come to the forefront as darker truths emerge. Nice work.

9. Sharkey the Bounty Hunter #6 (Image) ★★★★
Writer: Mark Millar / Art: Simone Bianchi / Colors: Matteo Vattani / Cover: Simone Bianchi
A speedy wrap-up and a lot of farewells. Not the most action packed comic, but some topical humor and plenty of feels bring it home. A touching coda to a fun series.

10. Avengers #25 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘Challenge of the Ghost Riders – Part 4: Spirit of Avengeance’
Writer: Jason Aaron / Art: Stefano Caselli / Colors: Jason Keith & Ericl Arciniega / Cover: Stefano Caselli & Marcio Menyz

Pretty entertaining conclusion to the GR storyline. Nice cliffhanger lead-in to the next story. A Solid wrap-up of a read.

11. Contagion #4 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Ed Brisson / Art: Damian Couceiro / Colors: Veronica Gandini / Cover: Juan Jose Ryp & Jesus Aburtov
Things are looking mighty grim, but there are still a few laughs to be had. I love the Moon Knight is being featured here. It’s a nice touch to have one of the lesser-seen heroes step in.

12. Immortal Hulk #25 (Marvel) ★★★
‘Breaker of Worlds’
Writer: Al Ewing / Art: German Garcia with Joe Bennett & Ruy Jose / Colors: Chris O’Halloran with Paul Mounts / Cover: Alex Ross

That was… something. An interesting tale of cosmic loss and.. Rebirth? I’m still not sure what I just read. It was compelling though, so I’ll give it that.

13. Amazing Mary Jane #1 (Marvel) ★★★
Writer: Leah Williams / Art: Carlos Gomez / Colors: Carlos Lopez / Cover: Humberto Ramos & Edgar Delgado
Fun, if unremarkable story featuring Mysterio & Mary Jane making a movie in Hollywood. Lots of set-up in this one, plus some fun Pete & MJ Moments toward the end. The art’s solid. This could be a cool ride. We’ll see.

14. Spider-Man: Velocity #3 (Marvel) ★★
Writer: Dennis “Hopeless” Hallum / Art: Emilio Laiso / Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg / Cover: Skan
Haley’s certainly out of control. I hope she’ll get her just due, but I know they’ll say she was just a kid and justify all of her actions. I’m sort of hating this book, but want to see where it goes, and hope I’ve gotten everything wrong.

1. Superman’s Pal: Jimmy Olsen #4 (DC) ★★★★★
Writer: Matt Fraction / Art: Steve Lieber / Colors: Nathan Fairbairn / Cover: Steve Lieber & Nathan Fairbairn
I think I’m falling in love with Jimmy Olsen. This book was so much fun. It bounces around from one silly set piece to another, while at the same time building an intriguing little mystery to solve. The Crazy Board double-page spread alone make this a classic. Inspired stuff.

2. Spider-Man #2 (Marvel) ★★★★★
‘Bloodline – Part 2’
Writer: J.J. Abrams & Henry Abrams / Art: Sara Pichelli / Colors: Dave Stewart / Cover: Oliver Coipel & Dave Stewart

That was brilliant. What kid wouldn’t do the exact same thing? I love that the suit is too big. Does he adapt a bit too quickly? Sure. Do I care? Mavbe just a little. Still, this is fun stuff. Great way to explore a teenage Spidey again.

3. Absolute Carnage vs Deadpool #3 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Frank Tieri / Art: Marcello Ferreira & Jack Jadson with Roberto Poggi / Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg / Cover: Tyler Kirkham & Arif Prianto
Lots of fun and laughs as DP & Spidey tackle Carnage (he’s everywhere!) and his minions. Lots of great jokes, but the story timeline is a mess lately. Getting hard to keep the narrative straight.

4. Metal Men #1 (DC) ★★★★
‘Domo Arigato’
Writer: Dan Didio / Art: Shane Davis & Michelle Delecki / Colors: Jason Wright / Cover: Shane Davis, Michelle Dilecki & NS Studio

Beautiful art and an introspective and bitter Magnus. I really like the writing in this book. You could feel the bitterness from Gold and the cynicism of Magnus. Looking forward to see where they go after this solid set-up.

5. Guardians of the Galaxy #10 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘Faithless – Part 4 of 6’
Writer: Donny Cates / Art: Cory Smith & Victor Olazaba / Colors: David Curiel / Cover: Patch Zircher & Dean White

That was a quick read. I lie the new Magus. Hard to tell which way he’s gonna go. Love the return of classic Drax too. Actually, I liked pretty much everything about this book.

6. Once & Future #3 (Boom! Studios) ★★★★
Writer: Kieron Gillen / Art: Dan Mora / Colors: Tamra Bonvillain / Cover: Dan Mora
Moving the story along we get a of of exposition and a new setting. Not much actually happens in this issue, but it does set some promising things up going forward. Art still shines, and the dialog remains snappy.

7. Something is Killing the Children #2 (Boom! Studios) ★★★★
‘The Angel of Archer’s Peak – Part 2’
Writer: James Tynion IV / Art: Werther Dell’edera / Colors: Miquel Muerto / Cover: Werther Dell’edera & Giovanna Niro

Some snappy writing and solid set pieces make s issue an enjoyable read. Love how things happen, but give nothing away. Solid.

8. Contagion #3 (Marvel) ★★★★
Writer: Ed Brisson / Art: Mack Chater & Stephen Segovia / Colors: Veronica Gandini & Andrew Crossley / Cover: Juan Jose Ryp & Jesus Aburtov
A slew of heroes join the fight to defeat the Urchin, only to have the contagion migrate to a new host. Some really nice scenes of various characters reacting to what’s happening, as well as some sweet foreshadowing of issues yet to come. Solid stuff.

9. Uncanny X-Men #1 (Marvel) ★★★★
‘Pax Krakoa’
Writer: Jonathan Hickman / Art: Leinil Francis Yu & Gerry Alanguilan / Colors: Sunny Gho / Cover: Lenil Francis Yu & Sunny Gho

Interesting reset/continuation after the HoX/PoX books. Everything feels too good to be true which means something bad’s gonna happen soon I can’t wait. Btw: Why do all new Mutants not look even remotely human, but most of the older ones do? Hmmm?

10. History of the Marvel Universe #4 (Marvel) ★★★
Writer: Lenil Francis Yu & Sunny Gho / Art: Javier Rodriguez & Alvaro Lopez / Colors: Javier Rodriguez / Cover: Steve McNiven, Mark Farmer &Morry Hollowell
Nice bookending of Franklin Richards in this review of the Bronze Age. It covered a lot of things I wasn’t 100% clear on, which was nice. Still loving those annotations.

11. Captain America #15 (Marvel) ★★★
‘The Legend of Steve – Part 3’
Writers: Ta-Nehisi Coates / Art: Jason Masters / Colors: Matt Milla / Cover: Alex Ross

I don’t mind gritty art, in fact I usually quite like it, but Masters’ work here is really shoddy. His Steve is beyond bad. Story-wise, this was actually pretty good. Tight, gripping, even a bit shocking. I do feel this whole story could be a bit tighter though.

12. Batman #81 (DC) ★★★
‘City of Bane – Part 7’
Writer: Tom King / Art: John Romita Jr. & Mitch Gerads with Klaus Janson / Colors: Tomeu Morey & Mitch Gerads / Cover: John Romita Jr., Klaus Janson & Tomeu Morey

A lot of exposition in this issue. I’m assuming this is due to the impending creative change. Still, the book reads well, even if I don’t buy TW Batman being able to defeat the entire Bat family solo. JR JR’s art has been a treat. That helps.

13. Absolute Carnage #4 (Marvel) ★★★
Writer: Donny Cates / Art: Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer & Jay Leisten / Colors: Frank Martin / Cover: Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer & Frank Martin
A bit of a mixed bag this one. It starts out really strong, then seems to come to really out of left field solution. Toss in last inte reprieve and newly acquired powers for Eddie and it all reads a bit too convenient. A rare misstep for this series. Hopefully it will rebound in #5.

14. Superman: Year One #3 (DC) ★★★
Writer: Frank Miller / Art: John Romita Jr. & Danny Miki / Colors: Alex Sinclair / Cover: John Romita Jr. with Danny Miki & Alex Sinclair
I enjoyed this until the last third when it took a hard left. Batman’s a jerk, and Wonder Woman has the hots for Supes? Huh? Also – the idea that Supes can fly thru space has always seemed kinda ridiculous. Sorry that the book had to end with him doing just that. It’s like a fumble after an 90 yard run.

15. Justice League #34 (DC) ★★★
‘Justice/Doom War – Part 5’
Writer: Scott Snyder & James Tynion IV / Art: Bruno Redondo & Howard Porter / Colors: Hi-Fi / Cover: Francis Manapul

Oh Kendra, you dope. Things go south for the JL just as victory is in their grasp. The story keeps getting bigger. I can see where this is going… I hope I’m wrong.

16. Absolute Carnage: Scream #3 (Marvel) ★★★
Writer: Cullen Bunn / Art: Gerardo Sandoval / Colors: Erick Arciniega / Cover: Gerardo Sandoval & Jason Keith
The Scream / Carnage / Andi battle takes a couple of wild turns. The book ends sort of… That Scream evidently can hod her own against Carnage is a bit of a surprise, especially after he kills her, but hey… comics.

17. Absolute Carnage: The Avengers #1 (Marvel) ★★
Writer: Leah Williams & Zac Thompson / Art: Alberto Alburquerque & Guiu Vilanova / Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg / Cover: Clayton Crain
Guiu Vilanova does what he can, but he can’ save Alburquerque’s artwork. It’s just unpleasant. At tines it kind of worked here, but mostly, no. As for the story – of all the AC books this one feels the most like filler. Awesome cover tho.
